This iPhone Cannot Be Used Because the Required Software Is Not Installed

Just as I was in the middle of installing iTunes my computer locked up. I rebooted and ran the installation again only to be presented with the following error after plugging in my phone:

This iPhone cannot be used because the required software is not installed. Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes, then install the 64-bit version of iTunes.

A quick reinstall of iTunes left me in the same boat. It turns out that you have to remove several Apple products in a specific order before reinstalling iTunes. So open up your Control Panel then uninstall these components in the following order:

  • iTunes
  • QuickTime
  • Apple Software Update
  • Apple Mobile Device Support
  • Bonjour
  • Apple Application Support*

At this point you can now install the newest iTunes and you should be able to sync your iPhone without any issues.

*iTunes 9 or later

Tried but no luck and it seem that the Apple Mobile Device is not installed as it’s not in the uninstall list.. tried to intall it manually by extracting the .msi file and came up with:

the installer encountered errors before apple mobile device support could be configured
your system has not been modified. To retry these operations at a later time, please run the installer again.

    Help ! I’m now without iTunes !!!

DITTO to what Aminproww says. I uninstalled Apple Mobile Device Service, but it’s not in the iThunes 9.0.3 64Bit download. What do I do???????????? I’ve looked for it everywhere on Apple’s site but nothing’s coming up.

Hello. My friends iPhone is awesome, but the iPad looks just so great so I can’t figure out which to get? What do you suggest?

  6. FettesPS says:

@Buford – I’d suggest buying the most expensive one available and then smashing it off your forehead. The iPad is a glorified pile of crap. Buy a real tablet.

I’ve been looking for a while for a good article regarding this issue . Searching in Yahoo I found this great blog. After reading this information I’m very happy to say that I have found exactly what I was looking for. I will make sure to bookmark site and check it out more often . Thanks! :-)

Hey, that was a great article. You make some really great points.

I personally think Apple is going too far with the secrecy about their new products. Case in point, the next iPhone. One gets lost in a bar by a drunk employee, and the person who finds it tries to return it. Apple won’t take it because they don’t believe him, so he sells it to Jason Chen, and they’re in hysterics about it and are charging him with a felony. I personally find it ridiculous.

    Thanks for the read!

I came across this post and it works for me.

Solution is to install Apple’s Mobile Device manually. No need to uninstall Itunes. Window will regconize Iphone after AMD is installed.

Hi – I tried the above and other methods and was about to give up as nothing was working at all. Then I stumbled across the following which worked perfectly for me athough I was using iTunes 8.x rather then the 7.x series: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1017414&tstart=45 The breakdown is this:

There overview of what we’re going to do is:

    1) We’re going to make sure Apple’s Mobile service is installed. By extracting the install file from the main setup file using WinRar.

    2) We’re going to make sure that service is started.

    3) We’re going to make sure the iPhone is using the right driver to talk to it.

You’ll need to use the Device Manager, Services Manager and install WinRar. If these steps are too complex for you, just ask a friend to do them.

Start by closing iTunes and pluggin in your iPhone with the power on.

    1) Now Make sure Mobile Service is installed (steps these follow)
    a) Have a copy of the iTunes 7.5 setup file (download it if you don’t have it)
    b) Download winRar and install it.
    c) After winRar is installed, right click the iTunes setup file (iTunes75setup) and choose extract to iTunes75Setup\
    d) Go into the newly created iTunes75Setup folder
    e) Double click AppleMobileDeviceSupport (.msi)
    f) Install it

    2) Make sure Apple Mobile Device serve is turned on via Services.
    a) Go to start, run
    b) type in services.msc and click ok
    c) Find Apple Mobile Device, right click and choose start (or restart)

    3) Install the correct driver for the iPhone via Device Manager
    a) Go to start, run
    b) Type in devmgmt.msc and click ok
    c) Expand Imaging devices and right click Apple iPhone
    d) Choose Update Driver
    e) Choose ‘No, not this time’ radio, click next
    f) Choose ‘install from a specific location (advanced)
    g) Choose ‘Search for the best…’
    h) Uncheck Search removable media…
    i) Check Include this locaiton in search
    j) in the text box type/paste the below line:

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers

If any of the driver update steps are missing or differ on your system but you see the Apple iPhone device, then you can try to change its driver to the driver in the above listed folder using whatever steps yours shows.

If you’re using a foreign Windows then the word ‘Program Files’ may be something different like ‘Programmer’ so change it accordingly… You can always click browse instead and manually find the folder.

    k) click next, then after it installs click Finish.

Now you can open iTunes and it will be able to detect and talk to your phone.

Worked like a charm for me!
