This iPhone Cannot Be Used Because the Required Software Is Not Installed

November 25, 2009

Just as I was in the middle of installing iTunes my computer locked up. I rebooted and ran the installation again only to be presented with the following error after plugging in my phone:

This iPhone cannot be used because the required software is not installed. Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes, then install the 64-bit version of iTunes.

A quick reinstall of iTunes left me in the same boat. It turns out that you have to remove several Apple products in a specific order before reinstalling iTunes. So open up your Control Panel then uninstall these components in the following order:

  • iTunes

  • QuickTime
  • Apple Software Update
  • Apple Mobile Device Support
  • Bonjour
  • Apple Application Support*

At this point you can now install the newest iTunes and you should be able to sync your iPhone without any issues.

*iTunes 9 or later

  1. I had tried itunes uninstall, change/repair, add software… everything. Finally, I tried this, and itunes recognizes my phone again! Thank you for posting this!

  2. I’ve tried this but it did not help. Also, I don’t have to uninstall Quicktime when removing the software, because it never installs with the other Apple other products. Help?

  3. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! I have been sitting here trying to figure this out for the last 3 hours. (off and on… walking away from the computer so I didnt break it.) I even called Apple and they wanted to charge me some ridiculous fee. I followed your steps and it WORKED!
    🙂

  4. It worked for me also and I am highly relieved. Thanks so much for posting these instructions!

  5. Thank you so much!! this totally worked! i cant thank you enough! life saver!!! 😀

  6. Thank you it works every time, this is my 2nd need to follow these steps to get the iphone to be connected. Any word on iTunes fixing this glitch? How many people are suffering this same problem in complete frustration before it gets FIXED?

  7. Many thanks for your help. I’ve tried to install itunes again and again, but only after I used your guide, did it work.
    You are a god 🙂

  8. My Iphone froze this morning and I have been trying to reboot but it it not working. I also got the error message about installing the 64 version of Itunes. I think I am going to have to try the restart option but I don’t want to lose all my contact info and other data in phone. Does anyone know how I can backup my phone data another way or instal the 64 version of itunes with a frozen phone.

  9. This works for the Ipod touch as well. I plugged in my ipod touch and it came up with this message, since then I’ve searched on youtube and other websites but nothing actually worked and I was pulling my hair out because this Ipod is just problem after problem. I stumbled on this and because I really didn’t want to uninstall and re-install it again but I had no choice so I gave this a shot and everything is working again! So thank you!

  10. I spent hours trying to fix this error then I ran across this article. It worked for me. Awesome, Thanks!

  11. Every now and then I get the update notification. After I download it it would not install due to the same reasons other readers complained. “Errors occurred while installing the updates. If the problem persists choose Tool>Download Only and try installing manually.” I did that but it did not work. I thought it probably was not working because my system is 64 bit, so I downloaded the 64 bit and installed it. The iPod worked, but the iPone6 did not work, again for the same reason allegedly because the required software was not installed “This iPhone cannot be used because the required software is not installed.Run the iTune installer to remove iTune, then install iTune again.” I first tried to fix the issue by using CCclean but it did not work either. Secondly, I tried uninstall, but it did not work either.
I wasted valuable hours trying to fix a problem that Apple created in my computer.
I hope Apple would work and live up to its name because we are in 2016 and this problem has persisted for many years.
Maybe a class action attorney would initiate a legal action for all people’s wasted time since there is no obvious solution!!

  12. Alison, you are completely right. I agree with you 100%. I love Apple products but obviously we should all be going on Samsung Galaxy!

  13. Oh my god! THANK YOU so much!!!!! I spent hours troubleshooting my iTunes issue. at first i was getting a “iTuneshelper” dll “bad image” error. I uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled but still go the error. I had to physically delete the dll and also go through my registry to remove the keys. Then after a restart, I got the error above that led me here. (I went through 6 other websites first which offered bad advice)

Your solution solved it. Thanks again!

P.S. Like Mitja mentioned….I am thinking now about moving over to Samsung. lol!
